The Museum of Fine Arts. Bilbao

The origin of the current museum is in the first Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1908 and opened its doors in 1914, and Modern Art, opened in 1924. Both institutions and their collections were actually in 1945, the year the old building stood. In 1970 he added the modern building, and in 2001 an important reform was to give the museum its current appearance.
The collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao includes more than eight thousand pieces, including paintings, sculptures, works on paper and applied arts, a leading equity group that includes a timeline from the twelfth century to the present. Preserves important examples of ancient art, modern and contemporary painting are particularly interested in Spanish and Flemish schools and the large presence of Basque artists.
The Museum has the largest collection of Basque artists and is also in that respect, the highest institution of reference for its documentary, its tradition of research and its proximity to the artists themselves. Not surprisingly the Bilbao painter Manuel Losada was one of its most enthusiastic promoters and its first director, and the painter Bilbao Aurelio Arteta was the first director of the Museum of Modern Art in Bilbao. In the course of a century-old history, the two institutions were merged into the current museum, which the most important Basque artists active since its foundation, Chillida Zuloaga, have a special attachment.
